Franklin R. McGuire, MD

Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Pulmonary Medicine

Originally from Indiana, Dr. McGuire learned to love the outdoors while growing up on a horse farm. He completed medical school and a post-sophomore fellowship in pathology at University of Kentucky before pursuing internal medicine training at the University of North Carolina program at Moses Cone Memorial Hospital. After internal medicine training he was privileged to do additional training in a pulmonary and critical care fellowship at the University of Virginia. After completing the dual fellowship in pulmonary and critical care he was accepted as a fellow in Interventional Pulmonology at East Carolina University. He then dedicated himself to academic medicine at the University of South Carolina where he trained doctors and helped advance the science of medicine through research. He is married with 3 children and enjoys college football and woodworking in his spare time. Dr. McGuire believes in the importance of effective communication and takes the time to explain a patient’s condition in a manner that’s easy to understand.

Mary O. Polk, MD

Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine, and Pulmonary Medicine

Dr. Polk received her medical degree at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. She then completed her residency at the University of Tennessee Medical Center in Memphis, Tennessee and her pulmonary medicine training at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City. Dr. Polk developed an interest in pulmonary medicine as she grew up listening to her father snore loudly, which she later recognized as undiagnosed sleep apnea. She now treats patients with sleep apnea and other conditions including asthma, lung cancer, emphysema, restless leg syndrome and more. In her spare time, Dr. Polk enjoys spending time with friends and family, watching sports and attending arts and cultural events.

Saurav Pokharel, MD

Dr. Pokharel received his medical degree from Tribhuvan University in Kathmandu, Nepal. He completed his intermediate education at St. Xavier’s Campus in Kathmandu, Nepal and his secondary education from St. Joseph’s College in Darjeeling, India. He also completed post graduate training at Interfaith Medical Center in Brooklyn, New York where he served as chief resident.

Board Certified Family Nurse Practitioner

Cassaundra Hefner, DNP, MSN, RN, FNP-BC, is a doctorally prepared nurse who began her career in healthcare as a housekeeper in a nursing home. She then became a nursing assistant and went on to receive a Bachelors of Nursing from University of North Carolina Greensboro, Masters of Nursing at Winston-Salem State University and Doctorate degree from George Washington University. She has served in a variety of leadership roles including Vice President of the North Carolina Nursing Association and has been instrumental in conducting research determining the need for nurse practitioner programs throughout North Carolina. She continues to lobby on a state and national level for variety of healthcare initiatives.
